As a wedding photographer, I always look forward to the first dance with special anticipation. It is one of those moments during the wedding day when everything seems to become a little quieter, and all the attention is focused on the couple.
For me, the first dance is not about perfect choreography. It is about your looks, touches, smiles, and emotions that can never be recreated in exactly the same way.
You Don’t Have to Know How to Dance
My couples often feel nervous before their first dance and tell me, “We really don’t know how to dance.”
And I always say: you don’t have to be professional dancers.
In fact, a simple slow dance can look much more beautiful than a complicated routine if you feel comfortable with each other.
Don’t think about how you look. Don’t count every step. Look into each other’s eyes, hold each other, smile, and allow yourself to simply experience the moment.
Those are the emotions I want to see in your photographs.
Choose a Song That Means Something to You
I don’t believe there is a “right” song for a first dance.
It can be romantic, fun, old, or completely unexpected. The most important thing is that when you hear it ten years from now, you immediately remember this evening.
Maybe it is the song from your first date. Perhaps it is a track you listened to at the beginning of your relationship. Or simply a song that you both love.
Don’t choose music just because it is popular at weddings. Choose something that is truly yours.
Don’t Look for Me During the Dance
This is probably one of the most important pieces of advice I can give you as a photographer.
When your first dance begins, simply forget about the camera.
You don’t need to look at me, pose, or try to create a “perfect” moment for a photograph. I will find the right angle and wait for the beautiful moments to happen naturally.
Your only job is to look at each other.
I love capturing not only the big emotions but also the little details: the way he pulls you closer, the way you smile at each other, a hand resting on a shoulder, or the moment you both close your eyes for a second.
These little details are what make a real story.
What If You Feel Nervous?
That’s completely normal.
Before the first dance, you may feel nervous because dozens of people are watching you. But try to imagine, for a few minutes, that there is no one else in the room.
It’s just the two of you and your song.
Take a deep breath, hold each other, and start moving. There is no need to rush.
If you make a mistake, smile. If you lose the rhythm, keep going. If you accidentally step on each other’s feet, that’s part of your story too.
I promise — it will look much more natural in photographs than any perfectly rehearsed routine.
Let Me Capture the Real Moment
During your first dance, I don’t simply want to create a beautiful photograph.
I want to preserve how this moment felt to you.
Years from now, when you look at these photographs, you won’t only remember the dress, the venue, or the decorations. You’ll remember the way he looked at you. The way you laughed. The music playing in the background. What you felt when you danced together for the first time as husband and wife.
For me, that is what wedding photography is all about.
Not creating a perfect picture, but preserving the real story of your day — with all its emotions, looks, touches, and little moments that will never happen in exactly the same way again.
